Abstract

Swansea University is in the process of setting up a Diabetes Ophthalmology Research Laboratory. This facility will be the focus of research into the natural history of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy), determining the risk-factors in the genesis and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the evaluation of new therapies in the prevention and progression of DR. In addition, evaluation of new technologies for assessing diabetic eye disease (DED) will also be conducted at the Laboratory. The new cameras, an Optical Coherence Tomography Camera and a Non-Mydriatic Camera, will allow the researchers to better assess the vascular and neurological changes in the retina of the eye in persons with diabetes when compared to current conventional methods
