Health Education and Improvement Wales oversees the provision of Continuing Professional Development for General Medical, Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals, Optometrists and Pharmacists across Wales.
HEIW's goal is to deliver excellence in postgraduate medical and dental education for Wales by ensuring that all training grade medical professionals and qualified medical professionals in Wales have access to high quality postgraduate facilities and educational support so that they can achieve their potential in service provision to the NHS in Wales. HEIW’s primary responsibility is Training which is delivered by NHS Consultants and General Practitioners (Educational Supervisors) across Wales.

II.2.4) Description of the procurement
HEIW’s Professional Support Unit (PSU), provide support for all doctors and dentists in training, guidance and information regarding support to all parties involved in postgraduate medical and dental training. This involves meeting with the trainee in a confidential and supportive setting to discuss their concerns and developing a plan of action jointly with the trainee. In more complex circumstances, the PSU will signpost the trainee to a range of specialised support services that aim to improve the trainee’s well-being and performance. The range of highly specialised support services will include but not be limited to:
- Physical Health
- Mental Health
- Professional skills
(Such as; Assertiveness/Confidence, Decision making/problem solving, Communication/Language Skills, Leadership/Team working, Time Management/Personal Organisation, Examination issues/Study skills)
Currently these services are only provided to trainee doctors and dentists, however the PSU within HEIW is looking to extend the scope of these services to cover other areas including, but not limited to;
- International medical graduates (IMG’s)
- Non training grade doctors
- Pharmacy trainees
- Optometry trainees
