II.1.4) Short description
Northern Ireland (NI) Water would like to run an innovation partnership approach to appoint a Partner to explore the opportunities with treated water released from NI Water’s Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTWs) and whether this could be used as a feedstock to produce green hydrogen using an electrolyser. NI Water proposes to establish an innovation partnership to appoint a partner for a demonstrator project as part of the initial phase to:
• design, build, commission, operate and maintain an at-scale demonstrator for an innovative oxygen and hydrogen ecosystem at one of NI Water’s wastewater works; and
• support it to run live and at scale for at least 6 months.
If successful, NI Water would want the option to be able to work with the partner to develop other facilities to support the production of hydrogen to fuel a fleet of vehicles and to optimally deploy the oxygen in its wastewater treatment processes. NI Water expects this will pave the way for a business case attracting investors in a portfolio of further electrolyser opportunities across NI Water’s WWTWs and Water Treatment Works (WTW) sites.
