Abstract

A test rig of metal hydride heat pump system is required to recover waste heat from a 20 kW Fuel Cell unit and produce 5kW cooling for space air conditioning. The metal hydride heat pump system can be also applied to other heat sources such as industrial waste heat and renewable energy. Initial research undertaken as part of FLEXIS programme at the University of South Wales has optimized waste management processing of fuel cell for space heating and cooling supported by lab-based analytics. Future projects will look to scale-up the laboratory systems and put the systems into actual applications including heating and cooling for automobiles and buildings with waste heat recovery.

Measurement & Control System

There are four meatal hydride (MH) reactors and there are two 3-way valves installed at the inlet and outlet of each MH reactor. The 3-way valves are used to control specified heat transfer medium (hot, cooling or cold water) flowing into each MH reactor.

There is a hydrogen pipe connected between each MH pair and each hydrogen pipe is equipped with one 2-way valve to control hydrogen gas flowing from one MH reactor to another.

There are three water pumps installed in hot, cooling and cold water circuits respectively. The pumps are frequency controlled to control hot water, space and cooling water temperatures separately.

Three water flow meters are installed in the hot, cooling and cold water circuits to measure the water flow rates.

Two hydrogen flow meters are installed in two hydrogen pipes to measure the hydrogen flow rates.

Three power meters are installed to measure the pump power consumptions.

Two safety valves are installed in two hydrogen pipes.

Data log system and PC is needed for the measurements

Capable of remote initiation of self-cleaning programme.
