Abstract

The purpose of the requirement The purpose of the requirement is to protect the trees after they have been planted from the Hylobius Beetle. The large pine weevil (Hylobius Abietis L.) is probably the most serious pest of newly planted or naturally regenerating woodland trees on restocking sites. The woodlands that Natural Resources Wales manage on behalf of Welsh Ministers have proudly carried the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) “stamp of approval” since November 1999 and that of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) scheme since February 2010. FSC/PEFC certification for sustainable forest management means that our forests. The management of all our forest is done in such a way as to maintain biodiversity and natural ecological processes, as well as being socially and economically beneficial. We have put sustainability at the heart of our forestry practices so that we can realise the full potential of our woodlands. Where improvement is required, it is our responsibility to guide and encourage the changes and to ensure that these fit with the international commitments we have made on sustainable forest management such as Improve the condition of native woodland and increase its extent. Hence, we are concerned that there will be significant losses of trees if they are not treated, this will result in a lower stocked, less resilient forest. Part of this regime includes top-up spraying to control the Hylobius beetle. If no treatment is used, the beetle will attack the tree in any four-year period, particularly during warmer weather. This is a purchase contract for supply of a suitable woodland chemical to protect against Hylobius Beetle.
