Abstract

Welsh Government has a set a policy objective for Transport for Wales (TfW) to decarbonise the Welsh bus fleet by 2035. TfW are investigating opportunities surrounding alternative solutions to procuring new ZEBs and the scope of this procurement exercise is to focus on opportunities presented by vehicle repowering. Repowering in this context meaning the conversion a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) bus into a ZEB, although we are aware that there may be the potential to include fuel cell powertrains in the future. The aim is to offer resilience in the fleet transition by adding agility and diversity to the introduction of future fuel technology as it develops and becomes available. Whilst also making best use of the embedded carbon within the existing fleet. Further information can be found in the tender documents.
