Abstract

Clwedog Community Learning Ysgol Clywedog is a Secondary School within Wrexham County Borough Council. As an inclusive school, Ysgol Clywedog embraces all students for their unique talents, dispositions, beliefs and backgrounds whilst fostering tolerance, understanding and respect. Academically and socially Ysgol Clywedog main objective is to support students to develop the skills and intelligence required to help them succeed in a challenging modern world. Whilst Ysgol Clywedog’s key focus is the education of its pupils we recognise that not all pupils and their parents have had positive experiences. Some households of our pupils have had poor learning experiences which causes a negative view of education and learning environments. This can be transferred to our young people some of whom have already had difficulties engaging in mainstream education. Ysgol Clywedog recognises that some of the children, young people, parents and families face real difficulties in their lives that have created significant barriers to learning in the past or are impacting on their learning now. Working in partnership with Community Focused Schools our aspiration is to re-build relationships with the parents and families in our community, to build on people’s self-confidence and esteem in terms of their experience with learning, in order for children, young people, parents and families to successfully re-engage with their learning and to have a positive experience with education. Ysgol Clywedog seeks to appoint an adult community education provider to support the delivery of an expanded service provision within Ysgol Clywedog and community venues to our wider school community. The first part of the project will provide learning opportunities for parents and families to develop numeracy skills through everyday activities and sessions, applying methods and provision that will support learning in the school and the community. The second part of the project will be to deliver activities to young people whilst their parents/family members are learning. These activities can be standalone activities or be developed to include parents and family members. In the short term, by creating positive experiences for adults to engage we hope that this will have a ripple effect on their young people’s learning experiences with particular reference to promoting and developing numeracy skills in a positive way. We hope longer term benefits will include better relationships between parents and family members. That education is seen as a positive experience and that Ysgol Clywedog is a positive place for learning, it will also help raise the profile of our site and provide future opportunities for engagement and activities that involves the pupils, parents and family members.
