Abstract

The School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, wishes to purchase four acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs), capable of simultaneously measuring currents and waves in a range of water depths. All instruments should be capable of measuring current speeds up to 3.5 m/s in minimum bin depths of 0.5 m, and to detect wave heights up to 6 m. Two of the instruments should be capable of operating in water depths in the range 10-30 m, and two of the instruments should be suitable for operating in water depths in the range 30-70 m. It is generally expected that the instrument frequency will be different for the two water depth ranges. All four instruments should be capable of being used on sea bed moorings and on moving vessels, with appropriate corrections for ship movement. All instruments should allow for multiple simultaneous sampling strategies. All instruments should provide sufficient memory and power for deployments of at least 2 months. All four instruments must be internally powered, i.e. they must not require the attachment of external battery canisters or external power sources. The system should include deployment and analysis software with post-processing licenses for two concurrent users. The post-processing should enable the calculation of statistical wave properties such as significant wave height, in addition to the calculation of instantaneous currents.
