Abstract

The aim of this procurement process is to purchase a Metabolic Cart to measure resting energy expenditure (REE) using indirect calorimetric techniques. A minimum of a 3 year service and maintenance agreement is also required. The Thyroid Research Group (TRG) at the Cardiff University School of Medicine has been awarded a research grant by the UKRI (MRC, DPFS pathway) for conducting a phase 2b randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a novel long-acting triiodothyronine (T3) called T3 sulphate (T3S) in hypothyroid subjects with the Thr92Ala single nucleotide polymorphism in the deiodinase 2 (D2)gene – D2 is the enzyme that converts inactive thyroxine (T4) to active T3. This will be a randomised, placebo-controlled crossover trial. One of the secondary end points of the RCT is comparing resting energy expenditure (REE) as an index of T3 tissue action in the placebo and intervention phases of the RCT.
