Description:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global One Health challenge requiring coordinated action across human health, animal health and the environment. The Welsh Government has already invested in initiatives to improve antimicrobial stewardship within the livestock and farm animal sectors, including the Arwain DGC programme. However, further evidence is required to understand awareness of AMR within the companion animal and equine sectors, the factors influencing veterinary prescribing practices, and the barriers that may prevent veterinary professionals and animal owners from adopting responsible antimicrobial behaviours. This procurement supports commitments within the UK National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance 2024 to 2029 and the Animal Antimicrobial Resistance Control Plan for Wales 2025 to 2029. The procurement was undertaken to appoint an appropriately experienced supplier to deliver a six-month research and stakeholder engagement project. The successful supplier will engage with veterinary practices, professional and representative bodies, companion animal and equine owners, and other relevant stakeholders to assess current attitudes and practices, examine whether the Arwain DGC Veterinary Prescribing Champion Network could be adapted for these sectors, and review existing public-facing AMR messaging. The key output will be a practical, evidence-based report recommending how future AMR controls, stewardship initiatives and integrated public awareness activities could be implemented across Wales through partnership working between government and industry.
