The Birth Partner Project aims to ensure that no woman seeking sanctuary faces birth alone. The project provides volunteer birth partners who offer non-medical and compassionate emotional and practical support to asylum-seeking and refugee women in the latter stages of pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and the first eight weeks postnatally. Specially trained volunteers from the local community work in small teams to support women seeking sanctuary. The volunteer birth partners ensure that women have access to information about their rights and entitlements, additionally ensuring they have the resources they need for their new baby as well as linking them in with local services via signposting and appropriate referrals. The volunteer birth partners provide 24 hour birth support at hospital as well as intensive support during late pregnancy and the first few weeks of motherhood via home visits and befriending support. The project operates in Cardiff and works closely with partners including local maternity and health visiting services and refugee support organisations. TBPP was set up in 2016, became a registered charity in 2018 and operates with a highly experienced and dedicated staff and board of trustees.
