NRW is undertaking pre-tender market engagement to improve its understanding of the capability and available capacity of small scale agri-civils contractors to help NRW deliver the objectives of the 4RiversforLIFE project. The pre-tender market engagement is being carried out with a view to undertaking a procurement exercise in autumn 2022 to appoint contractors to deliver the work.

The forthcoming works are to be delivered under the 4RiversforLIFE Project, an ambitious, large-scale river restoration project to improve the condition of four major rivers in Wales: Teifi, Cleddau, Tywi and Usk.

These four rives are classed as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) which means they are of international importance for their wildlife and plants such as salmon, lamprey, shad, otters and water crowfoot.

This project will use long term nature-based solutions to improve the ecological quality of the four rivers by improving accessibility for migratory fish, improving habitat structure and function, and improving water quality.

An important aspect is improvement of land management practices – preventing nutrients and sediments such as soil run-off from agricultural land by working with farmers and landowners to promote best practice farming techniques. The project aims to do this through working in partnership with local communities, landowners and contractors.

The works in scope of this procurement will include but not be limited to:-

-Creation of riverside corridors with stock fencing and tree planting

-Improving on-farm drainage

-Pipework including water troughs off mains or pumped from natural water supplies

-Concreting yards

-Roof water guttering

-Grey water harvesting

-Tree planting

-Hardcore for gateways

NRW will be holding an open period for pre-tender market engagement between 22nd September and 14th October 2022.

Contractors operating in each of the river catchments are encouraged to get in touch to discuss the work and contract opportunities. Contractors’ input is strongly encouraged so NRW can put in place efficient procurement that works well for all parties.

During this open pre-tender market engagement period contractors are invited to:-

-Attend a face to face meeting with the 4RiversforLIFE Land Management Officers and NRW Procurement

-Attend an online MS Teams meeting with NRW Procurement and project staff

-Attend an open contractor briefing session on MS Teams (date to be confirmed)

The face to face meetings will take place in or near to each of the river catchments in the following locations:-
