Abstract

The HIV Action Plan published by Welsh Government in March 2023 recognised that the current support provided by mainstream services alone may not meet the needs of those affected by HIV. It is important that people living with HIV understand and are empowered to have a role in the management of their health and well-being. Wales does not currently have commissioned HIV support services across the country nor a dedicated HIV peer support network. Peer support is important to those living with HIV, with benefits that include maintaining health and well-being through better adherence and understanding of health conditions. It has also been found to create economic benefits by reducing pressure on other health and social care services. There is an opportunity in Wales to develop and deliver a programme for those living with HIV.
