Description of the goods or services required
Gwynedd Council, on behalf of a range of stakeholders is developing a nomination to try to secure World Heritage Site status for the Slate Landscape of North West Wales.
Alongside the work to develop the nomination, Gwynedd Council have secured funding to work across the slate communities of Gwynedd to empower, reconnect and regenerate those communities.
We are eager that the unique stories from the seven areas of the nomination and stakeholder locations are told in a unified way that will convey clear and consistent messages of a high standard. The seven areas are Dyffryn Ogwen, Dinorwig, Dyffryn Nantlle, Cwm Ystradllyn and Cwm Pennant, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Railway to Porthmadog, Bryneglwys Quarry, Abergynolwyn and Talyllyn Railway and Aberllefenni.
Create Content
1. Write the narrative (number of words to be agreed) that conveys the main points of the nomination documents (copies will be shared with the successful tenderer) and what is distinct about the landscape (Outstanding Universal Value) in a readable, exciting and enthusiastic way that will appeal to a broad audience base: from special interest to visitors, the family holiday market (UK and abroad), but also to new audiences such as local interest.
2. Ensure that the narrative is appropriate to be used on different platforms which includes interpretation panels, exhibitions, websites, information leaflets, Apps, booklets etc
3. Write the narrative for the below themes (below) in context with the whole area nomination. We are open to amending or combining themes in discussion with recommendations from the successful candidate.
- The Rock and Processing
- Transport and Export
- People and Communities – Culture
- Rediscovery and Inspiration
- Ingenuity, Skills and Craft
- Landscape and biodiversity
4. Write the narrative for 10 unique / interesting points for each stakeholder site (to be agreed), for each of the above themes, the 7 areas of the nomination and for the overall nominated site
5. As part of the above tasks you should convey relevant ‘real’ local stories in the narrative – the personal tone in addition to the industry and industrialists by using content that is already available from the Gwynedd Archive Service, Snowdonia Slate Trail etc and working with the National Slate Museum who will be recording memories of the community of the Dinorwic Quarry during the Summer of 2019 and any other resources available.
Audit
6. Carry out an audit of resources and facts from current interpretation at various locations across the nominated site e.g. walking routes, business, tourist attractions, resources that have already been produced.
7. Identify the gaps in interpretation (physical and factual) and to prepare an action plan (to include timetable and indicative costs) to recommend how to respond to the gaps for the nominated area as a whole and for each of the seven individual areas.
Hub and Spoke locations
8. Work with Gwynedd Council to identify the main Hub and Spoke locations for the nominated site area following the recommendations of the audit.
9. Identify any gaps / needs for technology provision for each site e.g, Wifi, 3G, W4G
Digital
10. Create a simple toolkit to ensure that the online marketing of Llechi Cymru and stakeholders / business are interwoven so that consistent messages and opportunities to spread the word to customers on social networks are achieved via common #tags, tags and posts.
11. Recognise an approach to encourage user generated content amongst physical and digital visitors
12. Create content for marketing templates which can be used by stakeholders and businesses in Gwynedd so that they are able to use and download for free e.g website banners, posters, photos, wording etc.
Toolkit / Marketing Pack
13. Create a toolkit / marketing pack for businesses which will summarise useful information from the above tasks and how to present them to the customer
14. Recognise opportunities to work together to promote Llechi Cymru offers / packages / reductions / products across sites.
15. Create content for itineraries / visitor packages to encourage visitors to physically move around the site and key hubs in a safe way by following the story and also looking to engage with other initiatives eg the Wales Way (Visit Wales), Follow the Story (Cadw).
All the above tasks should:
16. Be firmly grounded in historical fact and the use of original terms from the industrial age. These can be verified with the Nomination Team.
17. Follow the key messages and Llechi Cymru brand story (enclosed) and ensure that the messages flow through the work.
18. Complete the work bilingually (Welsh and English). Any translation should be completed by a company / individual who are members of the Association of Welsh Translators
The plan should identify the key elements of the story of the Slate Industry within the nominated site, and the key sites or destinations which can help bring that story alive. The plan should also recognise a programme for monitoring and evaluation.
