Great British Energy-Nuclear (GBE-N) is a
government-owned, arm’s-length body of the Department for Energy Security and
Net Zero. GBE-N is responsible for helping to deliver the UK’s new nuclear
energy programme, starting with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), to strengthen
energy security, support economic growth and provide reliable low-carbon power.
Gwyndod Power Station is GBE-N’s flagship SMR
project on Ynys Môn (Anglesey), next to the existing Wylfa site. Wylfa was
selected as the location for the UK’s first SMRs, and in April 2026 GBE-N
signed a contract with Rolls-Royce SMR to begin the technology design and
site-specific development activities needed to progress the project. The
programme is planned around three Rolls-Royce SMR units, providing at least 1.4GW
of clean, secure electricity. At peak construction, the project is expected to
support around 3,000 jobs on site and thousands more across the wider UK supply
chain.
