Abstract

The FLIGHT project within the College of Science at Swansea University has appointed a contractor to build a bespoke Wind Tunnel to test living birds, where the bird sets its own wings to fly in the tunnel, and both the size and speed of the tunnel are designed to provide natural flying conditions for any bird that might be used. The tunnel is an open-circuit blower, which produces a flow in which the bird and the observer are at ambient pressure, with no restrictions on access to the bird. As the tunnel will be a blow-down design, the whole laboratory will need to be treated as a recirculating system. Although it was originally thought that this open-circuit design would mean that a cooling system was unlikely to be required, the on-going construction of the tunnel has indicated the need for additional cooling measures. The Scope of Works Specification HYD-SP-ME-0001 and Layout drawing Appendix 1 HYD-DR-ME-0001, were provided by Hydrock who were commissioned by the University Estates team to create drawings with specification of a suitable cooling system

Description of the goods or services required

Additional Information

Due to the current Covid-19 isolation restrictions imposed by the Government, both Swansea University campuses remain on shutdown, with no contractors or deliveries permitted to access either site. Therefore, a pre-tender site visit is not currently possible, however our Estates team have advised that whilst a site visit would be preferable, if only to see the access to the Wind Tunnel laboratory, it is not considered essential to meeting all requirements within the Tender Specification. A site visit by the successful contractor can be facilitated prior to installation, once the restrictions have been lifted, and staff and contractors able to return to site.

Please note that due to the current restrictions, an optimum delivery date cannot be provided at this stage and for this reason, tender submissions must remain valid for acceptance, for a minimum of 6 months from the closing date for the submission of Tenders
