Abstract

The University of South Wales Sustainable Research Centre (SERC) require a headspace gas chromatography instrument for the analysis of volatile fatty acids in bioreactor samples. The headspace method for volatile fatty acid analysis was developed in the university and is still used on a wide range of projects. The instrument will support the data collection of several pilot scale rigs, including the our UKRI IDRIC, FLEXISApp, FLEXIS, RICE and SER Cymru funded VFA Factory, working in collaboration with industrial partners including TATA Steel and Welsh Water.

Description of the goods or services required

The University of South Wales Sustainable Research Centre (SERC) require a headspace gas chromatography instrument for the analysis of volatile fatty acids in bioreactor samples. The headspace method for volatile fatty acid analysis was developed in the university and is still used on a wide range of projects. The instrument will support the data collection of several pilot scale rigs, including the our UKRI IDRIC, FLEXISApp, FLEXIS, RICE and SER Cymru funded VFA Factory, working in collaboration with industrial partners including TATA Steel and Welsh Water.

Instrument specification

• Headspace autosampler

• Sample carousel with minimum 40 sample spaces

• Gas chromatography instrument with flame ionization detection and free fatty acid phase (FFAP) column

• Platinum iridium needle

Hardware and software

• Appropriate software for analytical data analysis specified

• A computer system supplied as necessary to operate the instrument

• Analytical data should be accessible in it’s raw form but have a function to output the concentration values of the specified constituents in a form usable in common datalogging.

Delivery, installation and support

• Delivery to site within 6 weeks

• Full installation and testing on site

• Operator instructions

• Operator training

• 1 year standard warranty with on-site repair and technical support

Minimum standards and qualification required

Proven track record of providing instruments of a similar nature in HE.

Capable of delivering the requirements as per the specification detailed in the document.

Be able to meet all the technical requirements as stipulated in the equipment specification.

Be capable of delivering the requirements in line with the indicated lead times'

Demonstrated track record of providing technical support.

Comply with Net Positives requirement
