Abstract

TWI is one of the world’s foremost independent research and technology organisations, with expertise in solving problems in all aspects of manufacturing, fabrication and whole-life integrity management technologies. Established in Cambridge, UK in 1946 and with facilities across the globe, the company has a first class reputation for service through its teams of internationally respected consultants, scientists, engineers and support staff, whose knowledge and expertise is available to its Industrial Members as and when they require. This specification has been produced as part of an initiative known as AEMRI (Advanced Engineering Materials Research Institute), which is funded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) using European Regional Development Funds (ERDF). AEMRI seeks to create a unique facility housing a critical mass of equipment, expertise and resources. AEMRI provides an environment to test and prove the limits of performance of advanced materials. Through the use of advanced modelling and simulation methods, full, large-scale mechanical test structures will be designed and built upon finite element analysis (FEA) calculations. Advanced, automated non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques will be developed with the aim of saving the industry time and production costs as well as minimising the risk of catastrophic structural failures. AEMRI will deliver the objectives of the project through the following four technical strands:- - Modelling and Simulation of High Performance Materials and Structures. - Advanced Robotic Inspection of Complex Geometry Structures. - Inspection Systems for Very Large Structures for the Green Energy Sector. - Nuclear Fabrication Research Centre. This specification outlines our requirements for modification to TWI’s facility in South Wales located at: TWI Wales Harbourside Road Port Talbot SA13 1SB, UK. The facility modification will include the addition of a mezzanine floor (minimum 1T/m2 loading) within the existing double-height High-Bay Lab. The mezzanine floor is to be utilised for storage of testing equipment and for temporary storage of industrial component samples awaiting analysis. The mezzanine is to be installed above the existing X-ray Bunker and Immersion Tank testing equipment ensuring access to those research/testing areas are maintained following completion, including maintenance access to the bunker roof, and access to relevant control panels and e-stops relating to those items of equipment. The mezzanine will be open to the High-Bay Lab, and be fitted with appropriate handrails and edge-protection. TWI will utilise the existing high level gantry crane to convey materials to the mezzanine level for storage, but anticipate a future need for incorporation of a small goods lift. TWI would request any design allow suitable footprint for a future goods lift for transport of a trolley approximately 500kg and 2m x 1.5m x 1m (LxWxH). This specification does not include racking storage systems, alteration of existing services (lighting, emergency lighting, fire alarms, intruder alarms, small power etc) which will be undertaken by existing maintenance contractors for those services. It is not anticipated that any walls or ceilings will be constructed upon the mezzanine as part of this installation or in the near future. TWI will accommodate site visits in relation to this tender. Any questions regarding this tender must be submitted via the In-Tend correspondence facility before the deadline for queries date.

Advanced, automated non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques will be developed with the aim of saving the industry time and production costs as well as minimising the risk of catastrophic structural failures.

AEMRI will deliver the objectives of the project through the following four technical strands:-
