We are seeking tenders for the provision of Architectural services for an exemplar project, funded by the Welsh Government as part of its Sustainable Communities for Learning (SCfL) programme. Both the buildings and the process of construction will be exemplars in sustainability and innovative design. The project involves the design and construction of a new primary school and integrated community centre in Bontnewydd, Gwynedd.

Total quantity or scope of tender

The project involves the design and construction of a new primary school and integrated community centre in Bontnewydd, Gwynedd. This will involve the demolition of the existing Victorian Community centre (former school) and the current school (1970’s). The building will be carbon neutral and our vision is for a building that is a significant net exporter of electricity. Embedded carbon must be minimised; we intend to re-use materials from the existing buildings and source materials locally.

The project will require the design and construction of temporary school and community facilities to maintain all services on site during the construction process.

The provisional value of the construction contract is £9.1M, with a further 0.75M allocated for temporary facilities.

Under the terms of this contract the successful supplier(s) will be required to deliver Community Benefits in support of the authority’s economic and social objectives. Accordingly, contract performance conditions may relate in particular to social and environmental considerations. The Community Benefits included in this contract are:

Gwynedd has a strong programme of achieving Community Benefits through its schools construction projects. This includes training and work experience in all areas of the project which we expect to be offered by all the main consultants on the project, in addition to the main contractor and sub-contractors. You should indicate in your Quality submission how you propose to contribute to this element of the project.

The buyer considers that this contract is suitable for consortia bidding.
