Abstract

Velindre Cancer Centre (VCC), situated in Whitchurch Cardiff, is the only tertiary non-surgical oncology hospital in Wales. It provides specialist oncology services for the 1.5 million residents of south east Wales. The Nuclear Medicine department uses unsealed sources of radioactivity to perform a range of diagnostic imaging and non-imaging investigations together with radionuclide therapy. The range of half-lives for the radiopharmaceuticals used range from hours to weeks. As part of the patient chemotherapy treatment regime, an assessment of kidney function is required as an indication to guide and calculate dosage of chemotherapy for many different tumour sites. The automatic gamma counter is required to count 99mTc DTPA plasma samples, obtained at specified intervals following the administration of the radiopharmaceutical. In addition to the patient workload, the department is required to perform leak testing of sealed source used for quality assurance purposes. The gamma counter will also be used to perform these measurement. The equipment is used to count approximately 120 samples / 3 days a week.
