Heather cutting on Blanket Bog - Lake Vyrnwy

Description of the goods or services required

RSPB Cymru proposes to reverse the degradation of blanket bog at Lake Vyrnwy through the removal of artificial drainage and reprofiling exposed peat hags affecting over 630 hectares of blanket bog, about two thirds of the remaining degraded area within the RSPB’s FBT. It will be registered under, and completed in accordance with, the Peatland Code, a nationally recognised voluntary standard for peatland restoration work.

Additional Information

Heather cutting will be completed in line with the following requirements:

- Cutting will take place during the period set out in the Heather and Grass Burning Code (1st October – 31st March).

- Cutting will only take place within 50m of blanket bog drainage or erosion and in areas identified and marked by the Project Officer.

- Areas of sphagnum hummocks and hollow will be identified and marked prior to cutting and will be left un-cut.

- The Contractor will be issued with GPS units to record exactly what areas have been cut and when.

- Cutting will be undertaken by tractors on dual wheels or a similar low ground pressure machine to minimise peat compaction.

- The cutting bar will be set high enough to avoid damaging short surface vegetation and mosses or exposing bare peat.

- The method of cutting including the proposed machinery and a detailed risk assessment will be provided to the Project Officer before work commences.
