Description of the goods or services required
HCC is undertaking a project to evaluate the ability to generate long term genetic improvements in the Welsh ewe flock through engagement with hill ram producers and utilising new DNA-based technologies to enable performance recording to take place in extensive hill environments.
Services required
The project will involve the following;
• Working with a selection (between 7-10 ) of the Hill ram Scheme (HRS) farmers
• Using tried and tested laboratory methods deployed in sheep breeding schemes to ascertain the level of burden in individuals within the genotyped ewe lambs in the recorded flock in the autumn.
• Use the results to generate worm resistance EBVs and to investigate any relationship between the 2 methods of estimating burden and calculating the EBV
• Compare the findings with those of other breeding schemes where these methods have been deployed
This project activity will run until the end of February 2023. HCC will be responsible for the recruitment of the farms and will seek to have a minimum of 30 lambs per farm.
