Abstract

The Welsh Blood Service (WBS) does not have a current contract for supply of radiation indicator labels. The WBS irradiate red cell, platelet and leucocyte concentrates for immune supressed patients. The irradiation process will minimise the number of viable donor lymphocytes transfused with an aim to prevent graft versus host (GVH) disease. Prior to irradiation of the blood component a radiation indicator label is attached to each pack and will indicate when the radiation process has been completed. WBS purchases roughly 24,000 labels per year, purchased evenly throughout the period, roughly every two months to ensure consistent expiry date monitoring and batch number monitoring.
