6802 - Pont Ffordd Cadfan
Major Maintenance of highway bridge crossing over narrow gauge railway on Cadfan Road, Tywyn, Gwynedd. LL36 9ED and is located within a residential area with houses close to the bridge and Penybryn Primary School 100m from the bridge

The majority of the bridge is constructed from brick with a steel trough and concrete infill deck . The brige is 10.4 m wide, 3.8m skewed span and the soffit of the bridge deck is 3m above the track bed.
There are two independent metal footbridges either side of the highway bridge to carry pedestrians over the railway. At least one of these footbridges need to remain open at all time
The works include
1st Phase
Erect and maintain Road closure traffic management and diversion signs during February school half term (February 19 to 27).
Remove the road construction (approx. 375mm thick over the exiting bridge deck)
Carefully expose the gas main and LV power cable crossing on top of the bridgedeck.
Using hand tools remove the weak concrete surrounding the electric duct
Surround all utility assets with in-situ concrete
Expose the ends of the concrete bridge deck and the sewer passing through the deck
Clean and prepare the top and the ends of the existing bridge deck and base of brick parapets
Apply approved waterproofing system on top and the ends of the bridge deck
Reconstruct the road over the bridge deck
Road marking (double yellow and white lines)
There will be regular train services on the narrow gauge railway and the above works must be done without affecting the railway.
2nd Phase February 28th onwards
Works to the bridge soffit
Mechanically de scale the surface of the steel troughs and edge beams
Grit blast and prepare the steel surface
Coat the steel with heat resistant epoxy system and protective layers capable of resisting the heat, steam and chemicals from the train exhaust
The railway line under the bridge can be closed to trains from Monday to Friday each week during March but the line must be cleared and reopened to allow train services every Saturday and Sunday.
Access is on foot from Pendref Station level crossing which is 220m from the bridge.
Contractor may negotiate directly with Tal y Llyn Railway regarding hiring trollies that fit the narrow gauge railway or arrange for plant and materials to be delivered on train flatbed to site.
All staff will need to attend a railway induction by the railway company
