Abstract

There are many terrestrial invasive non-native species either established or emerging on Holy Island. These pose a threat to the Island’s native habitats, such as the coastal heathland, and in some instances to traditional structures and archaeology. Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam, Rhododendron, and Rosa Rugosa have been identified as the main threats on Holy Island. Japanese Knotweed and Rhododendron are widely recognised by the general public but Rosa Rugosa and Himalayan Balsam are not. Their emergence is not identified as an issue and therefore seldom addressed. Ragwort is not an invasive non-native species but on agricultural land it limits sustainable grazing practices and is poisonous to cattle and horses. Much of the work to tackle these invasive non-native species is labour intensive and requires specialist training and knowledge (e.g. LANTRA Brush Cutter, PA1 / PA6AW / PA6INJ certificates) and the resources are not available locally.
