The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Swansea Bay University Health Board have been provided funding to purchase virtual reality training simulators for the education of medical students and doctors in ophthalomology. The high end technology enables an interactive, three dimensional learning environment with an exceptionally high degree of realism. By having these simulators, medical students and doctors can train their diagnostic and surgical skills without risk to patients and independent of hospital routine. The training systems offer an embedded curriculum and a wide range of clinically relevant pathologies. Computer based simulators enable an effective, quality assured training method. The simulators record all training data and provide for evidence based assessment. Both educators and trainees obtain a detailed overview of the individual learning curve.
