Description of the contract
Over the last few years, HEIW pharmacy have been working with novice independent prescribers to scope out an appropriate training programme to support the novice IP during their early years of prescribing, to build their confidence and competence within their prescribing scope of practice. As the current community pharmacy contract has a prescribing service for acute illness and contraception, we wish to focus on this area first, as part of this pilot programme.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Wales, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), and Community Pharmacy Wales (CPW) carried out a survey last year to explore and understand the learning and development needs of community pharmacy independent prescribers in Wales. The findings highlighted that 95% of independent prescribers want access to therapeutic training sessions delivered by a clinical expert, focusing on differential diagnosis and key professional aspects. We therefore want to collaborate with the pharmacist professional body (RPS) to develop a series of workshops, to run across Wales to cover key areas of the pharmacy contract in Wales.
These events will be delivered both face to face and virtually and will be a 2 hour session consisting of some didactic teaching, knowledge quizzes, group work, case study discussions and a Q&A with experts.
Each session will involve the following individuals:
a) Session chair x 1 – a HEIW CPD regional lead who will welcome learners, and open and close the session
b) Expert speaker x 1 – RPS clinical educator who will deliver learning content
c) Session facilitators (pharmacists) x 2/3 – an RPS staff member/ambassador and HEIW/CPW facilitators who will support group discussions and breakout activities.
