Title
Woodland Management Work at Coed Cwm Einion SAC
|
2.2
|
Description of the goods or services required
The Celtic Rainforest LIFE project is a seven-year LIFE-funded project, focussed on improving the condition of woodland in five SACs across Wales. Work will include eradication of Rhododendron ponticum and other invasive plant species, implementing woodland grazing projects and undertaking woodland management. The project is led by Snowdonia National Park Authority, with RSPB Cymru and Woodland Trust as delivery partners.
Coed Cwm Einion SAC has been chosen as a prime example of Tilio-Acerion woodland, which describes small-leaved lime and ash woodland on steep rocky slopes. Tilio-Acerion is a scarce habitat recognised as internationally important, and Coed Cwm Einion is considered to support one of the best examples in Britain. The woodland is important for its rich communities of ferns, lichens and bryophytes (mosses and liverworts).
The project’s programme of woodland management works in Coed Cwm Einion SAC involves:
1. Creating 5 ‘glades’ by removing Douglas fir and semi-mature beech, most of which will be extracted.
2. Clear felling and extracting 2 larch coupes.
