Abstract

In 2015 Welsh Government commissioned Professor Graham Donaldson to conduct an independent review into curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales . All the recommendations made within the review were accepted by Welsh Government. Consequently, Welsh Government have embarked upon a programme of educational reform which includes the development of a new national curriculum for learners aged 3-16 in Wales. The new curriculum for Wales will have implications for the qualifications that are commissioned, developed and approved for learners in Wales at age 16. Therefore, new GCSE-level qualifications will need to be developed over the next few years that are aligned with and supportive of the content and ethos of the new curriculum. We are seeking the services of a small group of assessment and curriculum experts to: • help develop a strategic vision and approach to the qualifications taken by learners in Wales at 16 • consider the implications of the new qualifications on teaching, learning and curriculum design in secondary schools • help develop proposals for the new set of GCSE-level qualifications in terms of their purposes, design and assessment principles prior to running a public consultation on these proposals in Autumn 2019.
