Explanation
For implementation of light sheet imaging we have selected the Zeiss Z.1 imaging system as the only dedicated selective plane illumination microscope (SPIM) system on the market. The Zeiss Z.1 is the only SPIM solution that allows for integrated environmental control, full rotational control of the specimen for multi-position acquisition and restoration and utilises a patented Zeiss pivotscan functionality to avoid imaging artifacts caused by scatter within tissue. Secondary considerations for selecting this system were the necessity for dual side illumination, dedicated optics for examining cleared tissue and an accessible user interface for ease of use across multidisciplinary projects, with cross compatibility with other high end microscopy equipment available, therefore minimising training time (Zeiss Zen system). As a dedicated SPIM system, we see the Zeiss Z.1 as the optimal solution for 3-dimensional imaging of live specimens, primarily due to the pivotscan and its all enclosed environment chamber.
