STFC has been working on an ADC board based on the use of the CAEN Board. An initial order of 1 board will be placed. If this board passes technical evaluation, STFC would require to buy a further 30 of these boards.

Justification for selected award procedure:
The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator for the following reason: absence of competition for technical reasons
Explanation
Any alternative to the 128 Chs ADC Board provided by CAEN would require STFC to develop a new board, which would need to be validated by the ESS Project. The estimates for this are up to 3 man years of effort at a cost of approximately 300 000 GBP. More importantly it would would result in unacceptable reputational damage to the STFC and ESS. In line with Regulation 32 2b(ii) of the Public Contract Regulations 2015, competition is thus absent for technical reasons.
