Abstract

Mains replacement (also referred to as ‘Repex‘) is the abandonment of existing metallic mains and services, replacing them with polyethylene pipes. Our HSE mandated, 30-year gas mains replacement programme (ending in 2032) requires all iron mains within 30 metres (known as ‘policy pipes’) of a building to be replaced. From April 2021, we will be required to replace and average of 357 km policy pipes each year (in agreement with the HSE), alongside another 10 km of Iron greater than 30 m pipes and 69 km of steel pipes.

Wales and West Utilities Ltd is running a competition to outsource its operational functions of mains replacement, build and repair, emergency and network maintenance. The functions are divided into 26 Lots across the whole Wales & West Utilities region, which covers all of Wales and the South West of England.
