Abstract

A key strategic priority for CITB is the retention of trainees and current workers in the construction workforce. Each year a substantial number of individuals who train or have an interest in the construction decide to not pursue a career in the sector, which means the construction loses out on an estimated 60,000 potential new entrants. While attraction is important in terms of the increasing need for new workers into the sector, retention of existing workers is just as important to ensure the gap between supply and demand does not widen further. Improved retention of workers in the sector has a number of advantages; increased productivity, greater workforce stability, long-term retention and the ability to shirk the skills shortage.
