Abstract

North Wales Wildlife Trust wishes to appoint a suitably qualified contractor to undertake the control of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) along both banks of the Afon Ceiriog, from Tregeiriog to its confluence with the River Dee. The contract forms part of the Restoring the Dee Together Project, which aims to reduce the impacts of invasive non-native species across the River Dee catchment. The successful contractor will be required to locate, assess and treat recorded Japanese knotweed infestations using appropriate herbicide application techniques, including foliar spraying, stem injection, or other approved methods. A 2023 survey identified approximately 162 Japanese knotweed stands within the project area. Location maps and survey data are provided within the tender documentation. Tenderers should note that no management was undertaken during 2024 or 2025 and the current extent of infestations may differ from the survey data provided. Works will take place in proximity to watercourses and will require compliance with all relevant legislation, Natural Resources Wales requirements and biosecurity measures. Contractors must hold appropriate qualifications for herbicide application near watercourses, including PA1 and PA6AW (or equivalent). The contract is anticipated to commence in September 2026, with all treatment works to be completed before winter dieback or the first frost of the year.
