Abstract

The FCO works in partnership with other organisations to provide specialist assistance to British nationals abroad, which the FCO is not able to provide. Partnerships are with non-profit charities or non-governmental organisations, most of which are based in the UK. A partnership is usually an agreement over multiple financial years, although subject to funding being available in each financial year. One of the partnerships is for the welfare of British nationals in detention overseas. Last year (FY 2017/18), consular staff worked on 5 287 cases involving arrests and detentions.

There are currently over 2 300 British nationals detained around the world.

Proposals are invited from organisations with relevant expertise to form a partnership with the FCO’s Consular Directorate in its objective to seek to maintain and improve the quality of life of British nationals detained overseas, to ensure conditions meet at least minimum standards, and their basic welfare needs are met.
