Abstract

NHS Mansfield and Ashfield CCG has been selected to take part in the National Targeted Lung Health Checks Programme (TLHC). The programme objective is to identify the cohort of patients at high risk of having lung cancer and invite them to have a low dose CT, and are looking for suitably qualified providers to support in the delivery of the programme.

The CGG is one of 14 CCGs selected nationally on the basis of its lung cancer mortality rate being amongst the highest in the country.

The aim of the programme is to identify lung cancers at an earlier stage that is evidenced to result in better outcomes. It follows successful trials in Manchester, Liverpool and Nottingham. During the Manchester trial, 65 % of lung cancers were diagnosed at stage 1 and 13 % at stage 4, compared to 18 % at stage 1 and 48 % at stage 4 before the trial.

The target cohort will be 55 to 74 years old who have ever been smokers. They will be invited for a lung health check and, where required, a low dose CT scan. It is estimated that there will be 32 000 eligible patients in Mansfield and Ashfield and around 8 700 of these will go onto have a low dose CT scan. It is expected that 372 new lung cancers will be diagnosed of which 80 % will be at an early stage (stage 1 or 2) when they are more amenable to curative treatment.

The current trajectory is for the lung health check appointments to begin in Q1 20/21 with the initial scans completed over an 18 month duration. The service will be delivered in the community to improve accessibility in a phased approach throughout the district.
