Abstract

Clwb Ifor Bach (CIB) completed a Feasibility Study in March 2019 and the public response to the proposed concept designs created during the study was overwhelmingly positive. Now, CIB aim to further develop and explore the concept designs created during the feasibility study and ultimately secure full planning permission for the redevelopment. The intention is to develop both the building next door, which has been unoccupied for a long time, and the CIB existing building. This would allow CIB to upgrade the venue with both improved facilities and increased capacity, and also plug a gap in the city’s current live music infrastructure through the creation of a new 500 capacity space. The re-development of the adjacent property has been made possible following Cardiff Council’s decision to purchase the property and lease it back to CIB. This decision came as a result of the success of the “save Womanby Street” campaign, when the future of city’s live music venues came under threat following several planning applications for residential developments nearby. To enable CIB to realise its objectives, it is essential that a detailed and challenging Stage 3 process is undertaken giving CIB both a more detailed breakdown of the nature of the redevelopment and its design, a more accurate cost plan, a clear business strategy based on the results of Stage 3 and an analysis of how the project will impact on the existing business.
