Approximately 2 thirds of adults in the UK are overweight, 1 in 4 are obese and 1 in 3 children aged 10-11 are overweight or obese. Both conditions predispose to diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, cancer and general ill health.

Increased weight and obesity present a major challenge to the current and future health of the local population. Higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from a range of conditions including hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several cancers. It also contributes to increased social care costs.
