This is a short stay service for adults with a learning disability which helps support family carers. A good short stay is responsive to unique family, individual and cultural circumstances, is regular and reliable, frequent enough, long enough, enjoyable and meaningful for the person with a learning disability. It is:

• for all family carers to receive a complete break from the routine of caring, so combating isolation, stress, crisis and breakdown — ‘to feel energised and able to go on’;

• to help a whole family or community to sustained caring for the person with a learning disability;

• for people with learning disabilities to get an enjoyable break from their families, with real opportunities and choices to try new experiences, make friends and learn new skills.
