Abstract

Fife College required to appropriately support its deaf and hearing impaired students to ensure inclusion and maximise learning opportunities. As Fife College has no internal resources capable of meeting these needs an outsourced service was required to fulfil this requirement in the most cost effective way. For deaf students or students with sensory needs, reasonable adjustments required under the Equality Act (2010) might include providing communication aids or services, such as sign language interpreting. Fife College required qualified British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters to meet the support needs of deaf students.

No formal contract or agreement has been placed with Fife Council's Deaf Communication Service.

Following research into available services a request for non-competitive action was approved by the Scottish Funding Council to use the Deaf Communication Service for a period of up to 4 years.

The extent of the annual requirement is dependant on the number of successful college applicants that require deaf support.
