Abstract

Plas Gunter Mansion Trust was awarded a Delivery Phase grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund in early October 2025 for the Restoration of Gunter Mansion in Abergavenny. The consultants who developed the concept for the Interpretation Plan during the Development Phase cannot continue into the Delivery Phase. Therefore, the Trust now wishes to appoint a new and experienced consultant team who can deliver the design and fit-out phase. Plas Gunter Mansion in Abergavenny is a capsule of stories from the past 400 years. From peaceful domesticity to Catholic resistance, commercial use to historic revival, the building is now embarking on a new chapter in its history. The project has the potential to be a key part of the extraordinary narrative collectively represented by the historic and religious sites in Monmouthshire as well as a means to reflect and strengthen the cultural identity of the community of Abergavenny. This is an exciting project, one which will enable local people and visitors to learn more about the history of Abergavenny and its relevance to wider themes such as persecution, tolerance and sanctuary that have particular relevance today. The re-developed Plas Gunter Mansion site will house several mixed-use spaces: • A welcome space on the ground floor leading to an exhibition on the first floor and access to the hidden attic chapel on the second floor. • Flexible commercial units on the ground floor for lease to local businesses • A flexible meeting room space available for hire or community use on the first floor. • Two lettable offices on the second floor Through extensive consultation a framework of interpretive messages has been developed to structure the visitor experience. Themes and stories have been informed through consultation with different audience groups. A programme of participation activities will take place either on site or as outreach events. A full brief and accompanying documents are available as downloads attached to this notice.

Description of the goods or services required

The re-developed Plas Gunter Mansion site will house several mixed-use spaces:

• A welcome space on the ground floor leading to an exhibition on the first floor and access to the hidden attic chapel on the second floor.

• Flexible commercial units on the ground floor for lease to local businesses

• A flexible meeting room space available for hire or community use on the first floor.

• Two lettable offices on the second floor

Through extensive consultation a framework of interpretive messages has been developed to structure the visitor experience. Themes and stories have been informed through consultation with different audience groups. A programme of participation activities will take place either on site or as outreach events.
