II.2.4) Description of the procurement
The purpose of this contract is to provide an assessment of peat bodies within the afforested estate across Wales in order to identify priority areas for restoration to open peatland habitat. This contract will exclude some forest blocks currently subject to the preparation of Forest Resource Plans or covered by other activities such as windfarm Habitat Management Plans. Forest blocks selected for survey are listed in Annex 1. The survey will focus on “Deep Peaty Soils” according to the definition of Vanguelova et al (2012).

Natural Resources Wales is responsible for developing and implementing Wales’s first National Peatlands Action Programme (NPAP). The purpose of this programme is to restore peatland ecosystems across Wales, with a focus in the first five years of the programme on six priority action themes.
The programme (and NRW more widely) has a range of hydrological assessment and monitoring requirements for peatland and related terrestrial wetland ecosystems. This specification identifies and characterises the main categories of work required under this lot
