Abstract

The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, (MACC) and the Marshall Scholarship programme were created by the 1953 Marshall Aid Commemoration Act (as amended). The scholarships are named by permission after US Secretary of State General George C. Marshall, whose personal support made the European Recovery Program (Marshall Plan) possible and whose name has been associated with it ever since. The MACC is core funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Marshall Scholarships provide opportunities for young Americans of high academic ability to undertake postgraduate study at a British university and take a British University degree. In recent years about forty new awards have been offered each year. Scholarships can be held for 1, 2 or 3 years. Of the new awards available in any year 8 may be held for 1 year, and the remainder for 2 years. A small number of 2 year awards (usually 4-6) may be extended for a third year, if funding is available.
