II.1.4) Short description
Motors, Drives and Variable Speed Drives are vital to United Utilities and are process critical in many Water and Wastewater treatment activities.
As historic agreements have expired/phased out over the last few years, utilisation of Costain as the MSP to fulfil the requirement has increased however this has come with the introduction of sub-subcontracting and a range of limitations such as fee-on-fee costing leading to excessive pricing, greatly inflated lead times and increased complexity due to the number of parties that must be managed. As a consequence of this, UU Production teams are under budgetary pressure from poor value procurements. Through analysis of spend data, expenditure under the MSP model involved sub-subcontracted companies, and hence fee-on-fee costing. Considering that Costain’s own management fee stands at 32.7%, it has been identified that the MSP model is poor value for money.
