Abstract

The commissioning of mental health services in the United Kingdom has until recently concentrated on provision of services for those suffering with serious and enduring mental illness (SMI), largely driven by the requirements of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Mental Health. The lack of primary care based support for mild to moderate mental health problems or pro-active mental health promotion has been raised as a concern by service users, their carers, and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG).

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published guidelines for the management in primary care of many conditions associated with poor mental and often physical ill-health. There is a rigorous evidence base that shows providing therapies in primary care has some very good outcomes for a group of disorders including Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Self-Harming, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) all of which cause significant distress and disability.

Luton CCG is looking to secure a psychological therapy service that will have; clear pathways both in and out of the service to enable people to benefit from differing levels and types of psychological intervention.
