The Cardiff and Vale Health Board had an urgent requirement to ensure capacity for the surge in cases in the first wave of the global pandemic, as consequent the Capital, Planning, Estates and Facilities Board had to act promptly to ensure the additional ward capacity for the anticipated increased volume of COVID patients.
The capital schemes were for emergency works to refurbish wards to ensure patient capacity and safe Covid working arrangements whilst treating patients.

Explanation
Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The advice from the World Health Organisation suggests that most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and Cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.
