Abstract

Grazing project/Prosiect porri J1) Grazing project (Migneint)/Prosiect porri (Migneint) The partnership is seeking support to achieve the following aims: Establish a baseline for how livestock currently disperse themselves across the site from which the effects of future management changes can be assessed. To assess if cattle and sheep grazing pressure is even within a habitat type and if, in mosaics of habitat, stock distribute themselves to conform to the specific habitat stocking densities assumed by managers. Support needed by the prospective contractor will include: • Deployment and maintenance of camera traps across the study area using a methodology based on the aims and objectives of the project. • Regular input, management and analysis of camera trap data. • Regular monitoring, recording and management of GPS collar data • Management and monitoring of equipment related GPS tracking. • Collaboration with shepherds and land managers to monitor shepherding behaviour on the study site • Management of relationships with project partners. • Integration and analysis of all data collected across the study period • Production of an end of project report outlining grazing behaviour over the course of the study. • Disassembly of camera traps and clearance from the survey area. Requirements of prospective partner: • Experienced in developing site-specific survey methods • Experience conducting rigorous ecological surveys • Familiarity with browning trail cameras, Digitanimal GPScollars, Davis weather systems and igotu GPS trackers • Knowledge of upland ecology in the UK • Understanding UK agricultural practices, particularly in the uplands • Particular knowledge of sheep and cow behaviour • Understanding of Regenerative Agriculture and its practices • Understanding of how complex and intact ecosystems function • Knowledge of diet selection in herbivores • Proficient in data handling and manipulation • Able to work with a diverse range of stakeholders • Ability to communicate findings clearly to wider community The funding available for this work is approximately £30,000.

MIGNEINT – the works referred to as ‘Migneint’ are for an 835ha (2,060ac) area of the Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt located above Bala in Gwynedd. The moorland is 43% dry heath and 36% blanket bog, the remainder is made up of acid grassland, flush and bracken. The area has the following designations:

- Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

- Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

- Special Protection Area (SPA)
