Abstract

At each General Election, a number of MPs lose their seats. In response to various studies on the experiences of former MPs leaving Parliament, the House of Commons Administration Committee, in its report 'Smoothing the Cliff Edge' recommended a package of support for such MPs. The House of Commons Commission has approved a limited package of support in the form of career transition for those MPs at the end of their time as elected representatives, to help them to plan their future and adapt to life away from Parliament. This service would be funded by the House and delivered on a confidential basis to MPs directly by a third-party organisation, with proven experience in providing career transition and coaching services.
