Abstract

The purpose of this project is to aid in the restoration of the Afon Tawe catchment through removal of invasive non-native plants (INNS) within the National Park boundary. Surveys of the Afon Tawe, the Nant Llech and the Afon Giedd took place in 2023 using a contractor employed by BBNP. The survey area was 16.95Km of river channel with 117 landowners identified as owning land relevant to the project area. 11 species of INNS were identified: Japanese knotweed, Hybrid/Bohemian knotweed, Himalayan balsam, Montbretia, Buddleia, Cherry laurel, Rhododendron ponticum, Cotoneaster, Himalayan honeysuckle, Iris and Snowberry. We now have funding to contribute towards the control of these invasive species on the main river and the two tributaries (Afon Giedd, Nant Llech). Funding is in place for a 2-year control programme commencing August/September 2025 and to be completed by 28th February 2027.
