Abstract

The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Unit is seeking to engage a suitably experienced company to develop a Wye Valley AONB Heritage Trail app around the village of Tintern. This will be a bilingual app with interactive content for a walking trail visiting up to 10 locations in the village. We are looking for creative solutions which weave together the story along the trail We are working in partnership with Cadw, the custodians of Tintern Abbey. The Abbey is a well-visited ‘honey pot’ site in the Wye Valley AONB. The aim of this project is to encourage visitors to the Abbey to go on to explore the village, spreading the benefits of tourism to the wider community and local businesses. We want to enhance visitors’ understanding of Tintern’s history and their appreciation of the protected landscape the Abbey sits within. The theme for this project is ‘The Wye Tourists and Tintern’. We want to help people understand and appreciate how the landscape of the Wye Valley has thrilled and enthused visitors over the centuries and how it has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers and poets. We want to tell the story of the Wye Tourists for whom Tintern Abbey was the most famous attraction. The Wye Tour, a two-day boat trip down the Wye to view the picturesque viewpoints and romantic ruins, was the height of fashion between 1760 and 1830. Using paintings, prints and photographs by Wye Tourists we want to bring to life this period of history in an engaging but non-intrusive way. We are looking for proposals which are easy to use, fun and engaging, bringing movement and interaction to historic images which help people understand and appreciate how the landscape of the Wye Valley has thrilled visitors over the centuries. We are open to the use of interactive technologies, games, puzzles, drawing challenges, gifs etc to tell the story of the Abbey, the landscape and the Wye Tourists who came to immerse themselves in it. We require up to 5 interactive ‘features’ that will bring historic images to life in a fun way.
